Echobode may be a software emulation of one hard-wired effects patch, but itвЂ™s a very powerful and flexible patch with many possibilities. Flanging, filtering, reverb, phase shifting, frequency shifting, and panning effects are all possible with the module, as are any number of combinations of these. It comes with over 200 factory patches, and at least half that number are required just to show the basic capabilities of the machine, there are just that many possibilities in the basic setup. Their latest offering is Echobode, which combines a digital delay, feedback, a phaser, a вЂњsmearвЂќ (another kind of phase modification), a high-pass/low-pass filter pair, and a faithful emulation of Harald BodeвЂ™s classic Frequency Shifter, a kind of specialized amplitude modulation module, along with a highly controllable LFO, which can modulate either the delay, the phaser, the Frequency Shifter, or the low-pass filter to make things more interesting. Permut8, in fact, is billed as an вЂњImaginary Vintage Digital Processor,вЂќ which means that it emulates sound modification capabilities that existed with the digital chips of the 80s, but which was, in fact, never built, although it could have been. From the highly unusual Synplant synthesizer plugin, which uses genetic techniques to evolve patches, through sound modification plugins like Bitspeek and Permut8, which started off as homages to older equipment and then got decidedly creative, their work tends towards the unusual side of sound design. You need to register your Permut8 in order to download and use these banks. With version 1.1 of Permut8 we are offering a suite of Official Firmware Banks on our download page. Simply load a special type of Permut8 Bank file into the plug-in and it will automatically activate the new signal processing code. No complicated steps are necessary to 'install' these firmwares.

These firmwares are pieces of computer code that you load into Permut8 to extend or replace its signal processing algorithms. Permut8 can be expanded with new functionality through so called 'alternative firmwares'. Use the player on the right to try some of the programs on top of a simple Microtonic beat.

Permut8 is shipped with 11 'program banks' equalling a total of 320 presets covering a wide range of effects from traditional delays and flangers to beat-repeaters, bit-crushers and yet unheard of circuit bent madness. The sound of Permut8 is raw and complex but noisy and warm at the same time. The input and output stages offers virtual analog components for saturation, limiting and filtering. The delay is controlled by a programmable processor that allows you to change and modulate the delay time with various 'operators'. At its core is a 12-bit digital delay with variable sample rate from 0 to 352 khz. Permut8 is an effect plug-in that embraces the sounds of primitive signal processing hardware.
